Those were the words of advice delivered with absolute conviction by the very helpful girl at the Tourist Information Center in Kodiak, when Peter, in a somewhat less serious tone, drew attention to a sign lying against the far wall of the office that read, simply, “Be Bear Aware”.

Nathalie and I are just repacking our bags and getting ready for our flight to Anchorage, which leaves from Seattle at 5pm this afternoon.

Around midnight, we’ll be meeting Peter in the bar of Long House Hotel for a few beers to christen the tour.

Ok, so technically we’re not in Alaska yet. But during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 and 1898 Seattle was the last calling point for many miners heading north to Alaska. This blog first started in 2007 as a place to record my road trip through Alaska with Peter Mulvey. Since the end of that amazing journey it has remained pretty much untouched, aside from the occasional visit by me to see if it was still up and running.

But now, all that is about to change. With the second tour of Alaska only a couple of weeks away, the site is undergoing a major facelift. In the coming days the original content will be restored, and shortly thereafter the adventure will begin anew.
