Ok, so this is the first day of the tour proper. The picture above shows Peter boarding the DeHavilland Twin Otter, which flew us from Anchorage to Homer.
The flight was incredible. The experience is difficult to describe. The tone is set when the pilot leans over his shoulder to make the pre-flight announcement. There are no stewardesses, there is no in-flight service. This is not an aircraft of the sort to which most of us are accustomed; this is a 14 seater minibus with wings attached.
In such a small aircraft you can really feel the movement of the air around the body. Thankfully it was a smooth flight. I understand that when these things get bumpy, they get really bumpy. Perhaps I’ll be writing about that after tomorrow’s flight back to Anchorage.
Following our arrival at Homer we had about an hour to kill before Peter’s radio interview. Given that our B&B is right by the beach, we decided we’d take a walk to stretch our legs. Yes, I did say beach. Homer is a coastal town after all. But as you’ll see from today’s gallery, beach-front living in Alaska is a little different from, for example, anywhere on the Mediterranean.
