Where’s Tonsina?
That was the question that was on the lips of pretty much every Alaskan we told we were going there. Those that didn’t say “Where’s Tonsina?” said, “Tonsina? Where the hell is that?”
So, as you’re probably beginning to understand, Tonsina - or to give it its full name - Tonsina River Lodge - isn’t exactly well known. We received some clarification on this point when we spoke to the owner, Mark. “Well, it’s on this map here, but it doesn’t really exist.” It turns out that Tonsina extends to about the same dimensions as the grounds and car park of the Tonsina River Lodge - in fact, Tonsina is the lodge.
